For patients that are anxious or nervous about dentistry procedures, Dr. Sasan Khodabakhsh has the option of sedation dentistry at his North Dallas dental office. Depending on the patient and the procedure, there are a variety of sedation options to choose from, including nitrous oxide and a conscious oral sedation pill.
Trusting in Our Specialist
Our team understands how daunting going to the dentist can be for patients who suffer from a dental phobia, or for patients who need extensive dental work. This is why we offer sedation dentistry to North Dallas patients who need help relaxing. Through various safe and effective forms of sedation, Dr. K is able to eliminate nervousness while conducting multiple procedures in as little as a single sitting.
Nearly 5 to 10 percent of adults within the United States are considered to suffer from a dental phobia. Many of those patients would rather put their oral health in jeopardy than receive treatment at a dental facility. Fear of pain and the unknown can certainly be a strong motivator for avoiding the dentist. By answering all of your questions, addressing all of your concerns, and properly educating you on what to expect before, during, and after treatment, our team can help you to feel more confident in your decision for treatment. We value establishing and maintaining professional relationships with our patients by communicating with them and expressing, through both our words and actions, how we always keep their best interest in mind when providing treatment.
Committed to Quality, Comprehensive Care
For your convenience and comfort, we offer two types of sedation dentistry at our North Dallas dental facility.
Oral Conscious Sedation– Oral conscious sedation is administered through a prescription pill roughly one hour prior to your dental appointment. The sedative induces a calm, yet conscious state, prompting your body to relax. You will arrive for your dental appointment feeling at ease and stress free. An additional anesthetic will be administered at the beginning of your appointment to help you rest comfortably. The effects of the sedative last throughout the appointment and you will have little to no recollection of the procedure.
Nitrous Oxide– Commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is an inhalant that takes effect immediately and keeps you calm and relaxed, yet responsive. The sedative helps you to drift into a state of deep relaxation, settling your nerves and easing your worries. Nitrous oxide is administered under doctor supervision and your heart rate and vitals are monitored throughout the duration of your procedure.
For any procedure that involves the use of sedation, our team requires a patient to be accompanied by a driver. The effects of sedation generally wear off over the course of a few hours, but for your safety, we advise you to remain under someone’s supervision following treatment. Because Dr. K truly cares about the well-being of his patients, he always follows up with them to ensure they are comfortable and satisfied with the outcome of their procedures. He will provide you with information regarding measures that may need to be taken if an emergency occurs following your treatment.
Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
There are multiple benefits of sedation dentistry, some of which include:
- Multiple procedures can be performed at once
- Removes anxiety
- Relieves stress
- Calms nerves
- With oral and nitrous oxide sedation, there are no needles or IVs involved
- You may have no memory of your procedure
- Eased fear of pain
- Reduced pain through local anesthetic
- Allows our dentist to perform your procedure free of patient conflict
Dental anxiety and phobias are responses that some patients have in which they are so fearful of getting dental care that they may avoid the dentist completely or at least delay care until an emergency situation forces the matter. Dental anxiety is a serious condition that can be highly detrimental to your oral health. It is often caused by a previous negative experience with a dentist, but some patients may develop dental fear from other sources, as well.
Conscious sedation is a safe, effective way to help patients with dental anxiety and phobia feel more comfortable with dental treatments and get the care they need. The dentist provides the patient with some sort of anti-anxiety drug, which facilitates the patient’s relaxation. However, unlike with general anesthesia, the patient remains conscious throughout the appointment and the airway is not compromised and thus does not need to be artificially maintained. Also, because patients remain conscious with sedation, they are able to respond to the dentist’s instructions, which can make treatment go more smoothly.
Laughing gas is a commonly used name for nitrous oxide. It has a deeply relaxing effect when inhaled, and so it can be useful to sedate fearful patients during a dental treatment. Furthermore, the effects of nitrous oxide reverse quite quickly in comparison to other sedation alternatives, so the patient likely will be able to drive home after an appointment at which nitrous oxide is used as the sedation method. In contrast, patients who receive oral or IV sedation must make arrangements for a responsible adult to escort them home after treatment is complete.
The costs of sedation dentistry vary from patient to patient. Certain factors unique to your case, such as the type of sedation and delivery method chosen as well as any specialist fees that might apply, will influence the amount that the patient owes for sedation. Your dentist will discuss these factors with you in greater detail at the time of your appointment, or you can speak to our office staff by phone to learn more specifics.
