Adjusting to life after tooth loss can seem overwhelming. Fortunately, once you decide on a tooth replacement option and your prosthetic teeth are made, your future adjustments will revolve around learning to live with your new, beautiful teeth. While there is some adjusting to dentures necessary, the process can be nearly seamless if you know what to expect.
While your dentures will be made specifically for you, it is important to know that even though these prosthetics are custom made, there is still an adjustment period. For example, getting adjusted to the weight and feel of dentures can take a couple weeks. As time passes, however, wearing dentures will eventually feel second nature.
When you first begin wearing your dentures, you might want to resume life just as it were with biological teeth. It is wise to avoid these urges because while your new teeth will look natural, they don’t function exactly like natural teeth. Learning to use dentures is a process. For instance, begin consuming soft foods like mashed potatoes or ice cream with dentures and slowly work your way up toward food items that require repetitive chewing. Eating soft foods is advantageous to your gums as well. Your gums will need time to adjust to the weight of dentures. Consuming soft foods at first will help prevent additional discomfort.
Expect Increased Saliva
One thing people might not expect with dentures is an increase in saliva production. While this increase in salivation is perfectly natural, keep in mind that it will subside in a few weeks. Expecting increased saliva production will make this adjustment period easier.
Report New or Worsening Sensations
Most of the new sensations and discomfort associated with dentures does subside within a few weeks; however, some patients may need to return to our practice for adjustments. If pain worsens or changes, be sure to report this to our dentist so that we can make arrangements for an adjustment.
